Extra curricular

Whilst academic progress is prioritised, promoted and celebrated at HRCS we also understand and appreciate the importance of extra-curricular opportunities and the cultural capital, life skills and formative experiences these can provide for our young people.

We therefore provide a wide range of opportunities for students to access a broad and diverse range of activities and experiences during their time with HRCS.

Enrichment

Hadlow Rural Community School provides an additional hour of ‘Enrichment’ after school, each Monday. This is a timetabled part of the school day and allows students the time to engage in a variety of clubs and activities.

The intent of Enrichment is to provide extra-curricular activities for all students, enabling them to engage in activities they may otherwise not experience.

These can range from coordinated and competitive individual or team sports, to activities that are more social or performance driven, as well as accredited courses.

Extra-Curricular

Alongside enrichment HRCS also provides a range of extra-curricular clubs and activities both at lunch time and after school.

These include traditional sports such as; Football, Netball, Rugby, Basketball, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, Trampolining, Gymnastics, Rounders, Cricket, Stoolball and Athletics.

Alongside these, students can also access further clubs and activities in Art, Humanities, Film, Design and Food Technology, Music, Chess, Languages, Computer Science, Maths, Science, Young Farmers, Young Enterprise and Duke of Edinburgh.

These are also supported with clubs in Anti-bullying, Peer Mentoring, LGBTQ+ and Young Carers alongside daily homework clubs, intervention sessions and a ‘safe haven’ in Learning Support.

Hadlow Rural Community School also places a high importance on competing with other schools across a range of the clubs and activities mentioned above and coordinates weekly fixtures with schools in the local area and across Kent.

Activities Week and School Trips

School Trips associated with supporting subject curriculum content are coordinated across the school year. These will be planned based on a specific need within a subject area for example; field trips for Geography and Science, visits to the Tate Art Gallery, visits to Land-based businesses as well as visiting theatres and shows to support English and Performing Arts.

To help reduce losing valuable curriculum time across the year we also coordinate an annual Activities Week in the last week of the Summer term. This provides a greater amount of time for some more extensive residential trips as well as providing time for Year 10 to complete work experience.

Traditionally, activities week provides an opportunity for Year 7 to enjoy a residential camp with students previously staying at Swattenden, Carroty Wood or Bewl Water as well as camping  out in HRCS grounds.

Other trips have included; visiting the Globe Theatre, Penshurst Place, The Natural History Museum, The Tate Modern, London Science Museum, The Observatory Science Centre, The Sikh Temple, Oxford and Cambridge University and many others.

Residential trips are also usually coordinated during this time and have allowed students to travel to a number of International Destinations including; Skiing in Austria and France, a Geography & Science Trip to Iceland, Languages and Sports Trip to Barcelona, Spain and a Languages and History Trip to the First World War Battle grounds in Ypres.

We aim to provide a 5-year plan for the more substantial international trips such as Skiing, Iceland, Barcelona etc in order to allow parents to budget accordingly and allow every student to access one of these significant trips during their time at HRCS.
